The design process began with the observation of traditional monobloc injection molded plastic garden chairs which are part of S·cab’s history and with the intention of evolving that archetype into a contemporary response. The result is a chair that maintains vertical stacking but redefines every other feature.
The legs and the shell are two separate components allowing the project to become a broad and diverse collection. The shell gains strength from the contrast between a narrow geometric backrest and a wide softly contoured seat. It is a clean yet characterful design due to its unusual proportions. The angled legs form a rear support which makes vertical stacking possible.
Armrests can also be added and they are not simply an accessory. They change the chair’s personality. Like a ribbon moving fluidly through space they embrace the seat and provide the user with a generous surface for support. The shell is also available upholstered and covered in fabric creating a more comfortable and refined version with or without armrests.
Liuta fits into indoor or outdoor spaces with an elegant essential yet unmistakable presence. The name is inspired by the lute, a musical instrument that has always caught my attention in Renaissance paintings because of the intriguing contrast between the shape of its body and its neck.
